L’artista Krzysztof Wodiczko dà voce ai rifugiati in Monument for the Living, un lavoro site-specific commissionatogli nel 2020 per il Madison Square Park di New York. L’artista ha collaborato con dodici rifugiati reinsediati negli Stati Uniti, provenienti dall’ Africa, dall’America centrale, dall’Asia meridionale e dal Medio Oriente, li ha filmati mentre raccontavano le loro storie proiettando poi le loro immagini sulla statua del 1881 dell’ammiraglio David Glasgow Farragut, considerato un eroe della Guerra Civile. I paesi d’origine dei partecipanti hanno subito le stesse devastazioni della Guerra Civile americana che ha spinto milioni di persone a lasciare le loro case. La proiezione incoraggia gli spettatori a riflettere su come la storia possa essere ricordata attraverso i monumenti storici, e la statua di Farragut, quasi dimenticata dopo centocinquant’anni, restituisce nuova voce alla memoria.

2020 site-specific commission
for Madison Square Park in New York City. The artist collaborated with twelve refuges from Africa, Central America, South Asia and the Middle East who were resettled in the United States. He filmed them as they told their stories and then projected their images on an 1881 statue of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, considered a hero of the American Civil War. The native countries of the participants have undergone the same devastation as the American Civil War which forced millions of persons to leave their homes. The projection of this film encourages spectators to reflect on how history can be remembered through historical monuments and the statue of Farragut, almost forgotten after 125 years, gives memory a new voice.
