Burning Man è una manifestazione di otto giorni che si svolge ogni anno dal 1991 a Black Rock City, una città immaginaria che vive solo per la durata dell’evento sulla distesa salata del deserto del Nevada. Il nome Burning Man deriva dal rituale del sabato notte che consiste nell’incendiare un grande fantoccio di legno. Il fondatore Larry Harvey, morto solo qualche mese prima delle riprese, lo ha immaginato come un luogo dedicato alla comunità, all’arte, all’espressione personale e all’autosufficienza. Nel film seguiamo il viaggio degli artisti Arthur Mamou-mani, Andrew Johnstone, Dana Albany, Peter Hazel, Shane Evans, Kate Raudenbush che affrontano tempeste di sabbia e tempistiche temerarie per portare le loro enormi installazioni nel deserto. Li seguiamo per settimane mentre immaginano, costruiscono e alla fine bruciano le loro opere.
Burning Man is an eight-day event which has taken place every year since 1991 in Black Rock City, an imaginary city which only comes
to life for the duration of the event on the salty expanse of the Nevada Desert. Its name originates from a Saturday night ritual of burning a large wooden sculpture of a man. Larry Harvey, the founder who died only months before filming began, envisaged it as an event dedicated to the community, to art, to self- expression and to self-reliance. In the film, we follow artists Arthur Mamou-mani, Andrew Johnstone, Dana Albany, Peter Hazel, Shane Evans and Kate Raudenbush as they combat sand storms and meet seemingly impossible deadlines in order to bring their enormous installations to the desert location. We watch them for weeks as they imagine, construct and, ultimately, burn their works.

Nel corso della sua carriera ha realizzato film su alcuni dei più noti artisti contemporanei come Gilbert & George, Claes Oldenburg, Christian Boltanski, Marc Quinn, Gerhard Richter, Bill Viola, oltre a vari film sulla danza, il cinema e la musica. Ha ottenuto numerosi premi e riconoscimenti fra cui un BAFTA; il Royal Television Society Best Arts Film; il Grierson Best Arts Documentary; Grand Prize al FIFA di Montreal; il Prix Italia e l’Orso d’oro di Chicago.
