Nonostante la condanna agli arresti domiciliari e la sorveglianza costante del regime cinese, Ai Weiwei ha continuato a preparare mostre per i musei e i centri d’arte di tutto il mondo, come la grande personale del 2014 al Martin-Gropius Bau di Berlino. La regista segue la visita del direttore del museo Gereon Sievernich a Pechino per discutere e mettere a punto la scelta delle opere. Girato nell’abitazione e nello studio dell'artista e a Berlino durante l’allestimento della mostra, il film si sofferma tra l'altro su Stools, la spettacolare installazione formata da oltre 6.000 sgabelli di legno comunemente usati nelle campagne della Cina.

Despite his house arrest and the continuous surveillance of the Chinese regime, Ai Weiwei has continued to prepare exhibits for museums and art centres from the world over, such as his large 2014 solo show at the Martin-Gropius Bau in Berlin. The film-maker accompanies the museum director, Gereon Sievernich, to Beijing where the final decisions are made regarding which works are to be placed on exhibit. The documentary, filmed in the artist’s home and studio and in Berlin during the setting up of the exhibit, focuses on several of his works including Stools, his spectacular installation consisting of more than 6,000 wooden stools such as those traditionally used in the Chinese countryside.
