Attraverso inedite fonti audio e video e materiali d'archivio, il film ricostruisce la vita di Joseph Beuys tra arte, insegnamento e politica restituendo il clima di dibattiti, resistenza e utopia in cui operò il carismatico artista tedesco che fu scultore, performer, sciamano, teorico, artista rivoluzionario e provocatorio. Oggi, a trent’anni dalla sua scomparsa, il suo nome è consacrato nel mito.

Through the use of unpublished audio and video sources and archival materials, the film reconstructs the life of Joseph Beuys between art, teaching and politics while restoring the climate of debate, resistance and utopia in which the charismatic German sculptor, performer, shaman, theorist, revolutionary and provocative artist worked.
Andres Veiel è nato nel 1959 a Stoccarda e ha studiato psicologia a Berlino. Ha frequentato seminari di regia e drammaturgia alla Casa d'Artista Bethanien di Berlino dal 1985 al 1989. Da allora, è attivo nella scrittura di sceneggiature cinematografiche e teatrali e insegna alla Free University di Berlino. I suoi film includono: A Winternight's Dream (documentario, 1992), Balagan (documentario, 1993) vincitore del premio principale IFFS e del German Film Award in Silver, The Survivors (documentario, 1996) vincitore del premio principale all'International Documentary Film Festival Munich e del premio Adolf Grimme nel 1998, l'acclamato Black Box Germany (2001) per il quale ha ricevuto il German Film Award per il miglior documentario nel 2002 e l'European Film Award, Die Spielwütigen (2004), The Kick (2006) che ha vinto il Grand Prix Cinema du Reel, e If Not Us, Who (2011).

Andres Veiel was born in 1959 in Stuttgart and studied Psychology in Berlin. He then attended seminars in Directing and Dramaturgy at the Artist House Bethanien in Berlin from 1985-1989. Since then, he has been active writing film and theater scripts and lectures at the Free University in Berlin. His films include: A Winternight's Dream (documentary, 1992), Balagan (documentary, 1993) winner of the IFFS Main Prize and the German Film Award in Silver, The Survivors (documentary, 1996) winner of the Main Prize at the International Documentary Film Festival Munich and the Adolf Grimme Award in 1998, the highly-acclaimed Black Box Germany (2001) for which he received the German Film Award for Best Documentary in 2002 and the European Film Award, Die Spielwütigen (2004), The Kick (2006) which won the Grand Prix Cinema du Reel, and If Not Us, Who (2011).
