Stephan Balkenhol è un artista tedesco di fama internazionale nato a Frizlar nel 1957. Nei primi anni Ottanta, in contrapposizione alle tendenze astrattiste, minimaliste e concettuali della scuola di Belle Arti di Amburgo dove ha studiato, inizia il suo percorso artistico dedicandosi alla scultura figurativa lignea. Il film ci conduce nel suo studio dove lo vediamo mentre, con martello e scalpello, crea le sue figure da un unico blocco di legno, lasciandovi ben visibili le tracce degli utensili, i nodi, le crepe. Da Karlsruhe, dove è docente all'Accademia di Belle arti, lo seguiamo a Meisenthal, in Francia, dove anche risiede e lavora. In occasione di una vasta retrospettiva al Museo di Grenoble, il direttore Guy Tosatto, ci rivela il complesso rapporto dell'artista con l'arte figurativa e la storia tedesca.

Stephan Balkenhol has been concentrating on the human figure over two decades and began his sculptural process of figurative wood carving in the mid-Eighties – in response to the abstract, minimalist and conceptual approaches of the Hamburg school of Fine Arts where he studied The film offers a glimpse inside the artist’s studio and shows him at work, using a hammer and chisel to gouge some figures out of a tree trunk, leaving the shavings and traces of the tools visible in the wood with its knots, grain and cracks. We follow him from Karlsruhe where he teaches at the Kunstakademie to Meisenthal in France where he also lives and works. An interview with Guy Tosatto, Director of the Grenoble Museum, reveals the artist’s complex relationship to figurative art and German history on the occasion of a large retrospective of his work.
