Using previously unpublished archive materials, the film spotlights the cultural impact of three generations of the Getty family. The family patriarch, J. Paul Getty, founder of the Getty Oil Company, was an obsessive collector and was frequently defined as the richest man in the world. After his death, he left the largest financial endowment in history which would secure the future of the Getty Center in Malibu and build the Getty Center in Los Angeles which is now one of the wealthiest and most popular art institutions in the world. In the film, J. Paul Getty’s grandson Mark, founder of the visual media empire Getty Images, and composer Gordon Getty, the last surviving son, tell the story of their family. We follow three generations of this dynasty of art lovers through their personal successes, scandals, philanthropy and the kidnapping of J. Paul Getty III in Rome in 1973.
