Pechino, una città con oltre due millenni di storia, è diventata recentemente oggetto di cambiamenti politici, di una rapida urbanizzazione e di un boom economico che l’hanno resa terreno fertile per l’arte e
per gli artisti. Vediamo Xu Bing costruire Background Story, una delle sue installazioni in cui colloca piccoli rami, giornali e frammenti di plastica che, visti attraverso un vetro smerigliato, appaiono come il dipinto di un paesaggio della dinastia Song. Nelle loro sculture e installazioni Song Dong e Yin Xiuzhen utilizzano materiali facilmente reperibili come abiti, tegole, infissi e oggetti domestici. Nel film seguiamo i due artisti mentre installano l’opera The Way of the Chopsticks.
Beijing, a city with a history of
more than two thousand years,
has recently become the center of shifting politics, rapid urbanization, and an economic boom, making it fertile ground for art and artists. Shown at work in his Beijing studio, Xu Bing constructs one of his Background Story installations, in which he places twigs, newspaper, and scraps of plastic behind frosted glass to create the illusion of a Song Dynasty landscape painting. We follow Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen as they install their project The Way of the Chopsticks. In their sculptures and installations, both artists work with readily accessible materials, like clothing, roofing tiles, window frames, and household objects.

Vicky Du è una regista americana di origine taiwanese e vive a New York. Il suo film Gaysians è stato presentato in oltre 35 festival in tutto il mondo. Ha diretto, prodotto e montato in digitale brevi documentari per National Geographic, The New York Times, The History Channel e The New Yorker. Attualmente sta realizzando il suo primo lungometraggio.
